Mbarara is roughly 270 kilometres from Kampala by road. The route heads west through Mpigi and Masaka, and most drivers allow around four to five hours, more if traffic is heavy or you stop along the way.
One of the best-known stops is at Kayabwe, where the road crosses the equator. A monument marks the spot, and it is a popular place to take a photo and buy snacks or crafts. Masaka is a convenient town for a longer break and a meal.
Leave early if you can. The road is busy with trucks, buses and motorcycle taxis, and you may meet cattle crossing near Mbarara. Avoid driving after dark where possible, keep to sensible speeds and allow extra time in the rainy seasons.
Fill your tank in the larger towns, carry water and keep some small change for roadside stops. If you are not driving yourself, buses and shared taxis run the route daily and drivers can be arranged in Kampala.
Once you reach Mbarara you are well placed for Lake Mburo National Park and the wider Ankole region, so it is worth building a rest day into your plans before heading on.
