5 or more hours from Mbarara

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

A World Heritage forest and one of the best places to see mountain gorillas.

Small waterfall surrounded by lush green plants in the garden

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a dense rainforest in southwestern Uganda and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to about half of the world's mountain gorillas, which makes it one of the most remarkable wildlife experiences in Africa.

Gorilla trekking is done in small groups with a ranger. Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and must be booked well in advance, and there are age and health rules, so check the current requirements before you plan. Bwindi is also excellent for birdwatching and for walks that include visits with the Batwa community.

The park has several sectors, and the drive from Mbarara takes five hours or more depending on which one you visit. Plan it as a separate multi-day trip rather than a day out.
