Lake Mburo National Park is the closest national park to Mbarara, roughly an hour away by road. At about 370 square kilometres it is Uganda's smallest savannah park, which makes it easy to enjoy in a single day.
The park is a mix of open savannah, acacia woodland, wetlands and lakes. It is best known for zebra, impala and eland, animals that are hard to see in most other Ugandan parks. You may also see buffalo, warthogs, topi and hippos, and there are more than 300 recorded bird species.
Visitors can go on game drives, take a boat trip on the lake, walk with a ranger or cycle on selected routes. Conditions are easiest in the dry seasons, roughly December to February and June to August.
