About 3 to 4 hours from Mbarara

Queen Elizabeth National Park

A large park with boat trips on the Kazinga Channel and tree-climbing lions.

Queen Elizabeth National Park lies in western Uganda and covers nearly 2,000 square kilometres. It was established in the 1950s and is one of the country's most visited parks, with savannah, crater lakes, forest and wetlands in one place.

The boat trip on the Kazinga Channel, which links Lake George and Lake Edward, is a highlight. From the water you can often see hippos, buffalo, elephants and many water birds up close.

The Ishasha sector in the south is known for lions that climb trees, and Kyambura Gorge is a place to track chimpanzees. The park is about three to four hours from Mbarara, so most visitors stay at least one night.
